I founded The Gathering Place because I know firsthand the power of being nurtured by strong Black women. Without the love, support, and wisdom of my mother, sisters, friends, and female mentors, I wouldn't be where I am today. They inspired me to dream big and stand tall in the face of challenges. The Gathering Place is a love letter to my own daughter and to the many girls I have met over the years as a public school educator who needed something more. It's revolutionary in creating an all-girl space where our girls have the freedom to decide their own paths. Here, the girls will have a voice in deciding when and where they enter different learning experiences. They will orchestrate their learning paths, whether they choose to dive into tech, math, and STEM or explore their talents as poets. The individualized education at The Gathering Place ensures that each girl's unique interests and strengths are supported. This is the micro school that our girls need. By investing in the education and empowerment of Black girls, we're not just supporting their individual growth—we're building a foundation for stronger, more vibrant communities.
When we talk about all-girl education, especially for Black girls, we're talking about creating powerful spaces where they can shine unapologetically. Imagine a place where girls are encouraged to embrace their full potential, free from societal pressures and stereotypes. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in her famous TED Talk "We Should All Be Feminists," reminds us that "we should all be feminists" because feminism is about fairness and giving everyone the chance to be their best selves. All-girl schools flip this narrative, creating an environment where girls are taught to be bold, ambitious, and strong. And remember, Black feminism isn't just about empowering our girls—it's about lifting up our men and building our communities together.
Strong girls make strong Black families and communities. When Black girls are nurtured in feminist spaces, they grow into women who are confident and capable of leading and inspiring others. These girls become the backbone of their families, bringing strength, resilience, and empowerment into their homes and communities. They challenge the status quo and push for change, making waves that reach far beyond their immediate circles. Research shows that single-gender learning environments can significantly boost girls' academic performance, leadership skills, and self-esteem. The National Coalition of Girls' Schools found that graduates of all-girl schools are more likely to pursue careers in STEM, hold leadership positions, and feel confident in their abilities compared to their peers from coeducational schools.
So, let's get real for a minute. Imagine a world where our girls are unapologetically themselves, whether they're coding the next big app, discovering a new planet, or writing the poetry that changes hearts. Sounds amazing, right? That's what we're building here. If we want our girls to take over the world (and let's be honest, we know they can), we need to give them the spaces to grow, learn, and lead.
To all the Black girls out there: The Gathering Place is your place. Your dreams, your voice, your journey. Let's make it happen together. Join us, support us, and watch how we change the world, one strong girl at a time. Because the future is bright, and it's full of fierce, unstoppable Black girls ready to shine.
